Balance Your Testosterone, Estrogen and Cortisol

By: Robert Pierce and Jamie Bussin

On Episode #209 of TheTonic Talk Show and Podcast, Robert Pierce, the directing mind behind Prairie Naturals and a leading Canadian men’s health expert, and I spoke about the connection between hormones and men’s health as they age. This article is a distillation of our conversation.

Men have very specific health needs and concerns different from females. They have issues as they get older -higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, liver disease and cancer. Studies show that 50% of men aged 51-60 and over 90% of men aged 80+ suffer from benign enlarged meta prostate. This swelling of the prostate is painful, can disrupt sleep patterns and makes men feel the need to urinate more frequently, while simultaneously restricting urine flow.

One of the first signs of a swollen prostate is an increased urge to urinate; with reduced urine flow and pain. That may result in getting up many times a night. But it can also manifest in lower back pain, night sweats and irritability. The signs come on fairly quickly. Fortunately the condition is treatable. Natural ingredients which support prostate health include Vitamin B6 and zinc along with plant extracts such as Saw palmetto, Pygeum bark, lycopene, stinging nettle root and pumpkin seeds (found in Prost Force).

Men’s health concerns as they age are connected to their hormonal balance. In andropause, cortisol levels in men get out of control and estrogen levels get too high. When estrogen levels are too high in men the body retains fat in the chest and belly area. With increased cortisol, men sweat more and become more nervous. Natural supplements such as DIM can help regulate estrogen and cortisol levels.

As men age testosterone levels reduce. The crucial measure is that of free testosterone in the system (typically only 2-3% of all testosterone). Deficiency of free testosterone impacts the ability to exercise, brain function, and maintain bone mass. If there is sufficient free testosterone levels in the blood stream, men can continue to enjoy a healthy sex life as they age. It won’t be the same as when they were in their 20’s or 30’s, but the drive will still be there. To maintain sexual health it is also important to exercise, get a good night’s sleep, and eat the right foods – which contain sulphur to help build hormones in the body. Supplementation can help too. Herbs such as Eurycoma longifolia jack (Tongkat Ali), Rhodiola rosea, Tribulus terrestris, Panax ginseng, Ginkgo biloba, Saw palmetto and Pumpkin seed oil are FDA-approved and clinically proven to enhance male sexual health (and found in Vigor Force).

Jamie and Robert’s Top Training Tips

Jamie: I used to engage in mostly aerobic activities such as running and spinning. But in the past few years I’ve shifted my workout schedule so that 60% of my workouts (3 of 5) include at least 30 minutes of weight training.

Robert: I like to do pullovers every time I go to the gym. It’s very important for breathing. I work on my diaphragm, expand my rib cage, and fill my lungs full of oxygen. I do 30-40 reps before I do anything else, before I even stretch. I start with a 40 lb. weight and work up to 60 lbs.
